The Simplicity of Backgammon Rules
Chess and backgammon are two board games that offer a very similar experience. Yet, many people choose chess because they’re more familiar with how the board looks. Of course, many people are reconsidering this move now as backgammon has become an extremely popular casino game and, to their surprise, they’re finding that backgammon rules are very simple and less complicated than chess.
As opposed to chess where you have many pieces that all have different moving patterns and spaces that some can’t touch, backgammon rules are very straight forward. You can move on any space that your opponent is not blocking and the simple objective is to roll dice, move that many points, and be the first person to move your checkers around and then off of the board. There are no special pieces that can only move certain ways or attack from certain squares; backgammon rules are really straight forward.
Now, that’s not to confuse rules with strategy. While the rules are easy to learn, strategy takes practice. You have to know how to play the board; will you run it with a fast paced strategy or will you slow the game and look to anchor points and prevent your opponent from moving. Will you try to hit your opponent’s checkers or just avoid being hit? There are many strategies to playing backgammon which make it challenging, competitive and exciting. These strategies are what separate the good players from the pack.
